Getting HEIC photos off your iPhone

  • AirDrop to a Mac: photos usually arrive as HEIC files. Drop them here to convert.
  • USB cable to Windows: if your iPhone's Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC is set to "Keep Originals", photos arrive as HEIC. "Automatic" converts them to JPG during the transfer.
  • iCloud Photos on the web: downloads keep the HEIC format; convert them here afterwards.

JPG, PNG or WebP?

JPG works everywhere and is the right choice for sharing, printing and uploading to websites.PNG is lossless but files are several times larger. WebP gives the smallest files and works in all modern browsers, but some older apps can't open it.

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads use for photos since iOS 11. It takes about half the space of JPG, but many websites, Windows programs and older devices can't open it.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows?

Will I lose quality converting HEIC to JPG?

At the default 92% quality the difference is invisible for normal viewing. For editing or archiving with no loss at all, choose PNG, which gives larger files.

How do I stop my iPhone saving photos as HEIC?

On your iPhone go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose "Most Compatible". New photos will be saved as JPG. Existing photos stay HEIC.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion happens inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your photos never leave your device.

Can I convert Live Photos?

Yes, the still image of a Live Photo is converted to JPG. The short video part is a separate file and is not included.
